Tutorial Miniball
August 28th, 2006the miniball section has not been finished yet but many thanks to -Alien- (one of the miniball trainers from the improve channel) for writing the following article and making the diagrams:

Miniball is a great map for developing your skills in uniball without having to know all the advanced tactics to the game of uniball. Most of the shots can be done both at the top and bottom.
Beginner shots: Shoot off the top wall just before half way from the goal so it bounces off the wall and goes in at the bottom of the goal (Picture 1). Bounce at the bottom of the goal (next to the goal) and shoot it in when the goalie is going up (Picture 2), (a nice tip: the goalie tries to predict where the ball will go, try make it so the goalie predicts it will go to the top of the goal. See picture 2 dotted line).
Advance shots: The advance shots can be very hard to new players. The hardest shot I think is shooting at the top wall right next to the goalie so the goalie goes about half way to the goal and the ball bounces off the bottom of the goalie and goes in (never use it in game so no point of picture). The other hard shot is the shot where the player shoots it up just before half way across the map, the ball bounces off the top wall of the map, the player recollects it and either does 1) shoots it at the top wall, it bounces off the top wall and goes in at the top of the goal (Picture 3) OR 2) bounces it off the top wall and catches it, bounces it about 3 times and shoots at the wall and it goes in at the top of the goal (Picture 4).
Bouncing: Bouncing is when a player shoots the ball at a wall, the ball bounces off the wall and the player catches the ball again. Miniball is a great map to practise bouncing. To bounce I advise aiming STRAIGHT at a wall, hold break, forward and shoot and seeing how many bounces you can do. Then try moving and bouncing, when moving do not hold break but hold shoot and forward, turn your ship slightly to the way you want to bounce + move.
Face offs: Face offs are vital in miniball. A face off is at the start of the map where to players try to get the ball. If you do not get the ball then it could mean you might not get a touch of the ball and the other player will score. Face offs are more important in a 1 v 1 than in a 2 v 2 or 3 v 3 because in a 2 v 2 or 3 v 3 there are more players to defend but it does help in all games. To win the face off when the round first begins, quickly boost at the player so you hit him and once you both collide, you hold break. Then when you have gone back you can boost at him again then KEEP HOLD OF BREAK AND KEEP HITTING HIM till you win the face off. Also you can hold the mouse button to shoot down or up and quickly get the ball.
To win the face off after a goal has been scored you must either 1) get slightly in front of the player and hold break so he hits you, once hit go forward a bit and hold break again so he hits you again. Do this 4 times and the ball SHOULD be yours. 2) Race straight to the ball and wait for him to come to you. When he does try hit him but be careful not to miss him and let him around you. Once again keep hold of break after hitting until you win then you can either shoot it away or try get around him with the ball (a.k.a juking). 3) If he beats you to the ball try confuse him by first going up/down then stopping, turning so you aim the 45 degrees the other way and go past him (juking again).
Defence: I think defence is the hardest thing to do in miniball. The easiest way I have found is to either 1) If the player is keeping the ball to himself try charge him and double him (this could be very bad if it does not work because he could pass and give it to the other player. Know the player’s playing style before doing this defence). 2) Stay with the player, keep going backwards and pressuring him till he makes the mistake and you take the ball (best in 1 v 1) 3) Aim at the player, keep hold of break when near him and pressure him untill he bounces too close to the wall and gives you the ball.
Passing: Passing can be very useful in miniball and all maps. If you are trying to show off and not passing because you are showing off but keep loosing the ball then my advice to you is just start passing. I tried doing this for a long time so eventually I gave up and just passed when I knew I was going to lose it. Most players do not like players that hog (keep the ball to themselves) and then loose it or pass it near the goal. I only pass if the player is fairly good or is above fairly good and if the player is going to pass back. My advise on making passes is do simple passes to begin with then make more advance passes such as bouncing off wall passes.
